Mixed marriages between foreigners and Russian citizens are becoming increasingly common: such marriages bring together different cultures and open new opportunities for both spouses. However, registering such a marriage in Russia requires specific legal requirements and preparation of documents that differ from marriage between Russian citizens. The foreign spouse must provide documents from their country, properly legalized and translated, and any error in preparation can lead to refusal and long delays. At Global Docs Pro, we handle the entire process — from document preparation to registration at ZAGS — so you can focus on what matters most: the start of your life together.
Documents Required from a Foreigner for Marriage in Russia
A foreign citizen must provide the following package of documents for marriage registration in Russia.
- International passport with notarized translation — the passport is translated by a certified translator and notarized by a Russian notary.
- Certificate of no impediment to marriage — issued by the competent authority of your country, confirming you are not in another marriage. Must have an apostille or consular legalization and a certified translation.
- Visa documents — a valid visa or migration card confirming lawful presence in Russia.
- Documents on dissolution of a previous marriage — if you were married before, a divorce certificate with apostille and translation.
- Name change certificate — if your documents are in a different name (with apostille and translation).
Marriage Registration Procedure in Russia
1. Document preparation
The first stage is preparing and legalizing all documents: translating the passport, obtaining the certificate of no impediment to marriage, apostilling and translating documents. We guide the process at every stage and verify correct preparation.
2. Filing the application with ZAGS
The marriage application is filed at the chosen registry office. Usually, personal presence of both spouses is required. Russian citizens can apply online through the Gosuslugi portal. Foreigners apply in person at ZAGS. We select the ZAGS office considering your preferences and timing.
3. Setting the ceremony date
As a general rule, marriage is registered one month after the application is filed. With valid reasons (pregnancy, childbirth, business trip, special circumstances), the period can be shortened — up to registration on the day of filing.
4. The registration ceremony
On the appointed day, you come to ZAGS with your documents and the registrar performs the marriage. You receive a marriage certificate and a stamp in the passport (for Russian citizens). The Russian marriage certificate is issued in Russian.
5. Legalizing the certificate for use abroad
If you plan to use the Russian marriage certificate in your country or third states, an apostille and notarized translation are required. We help obtain the apostille and translate the certificate into the required language.
Special Requirements for Citizens of Certain Countries
Some states require mandatory registration of the marriage at their consulate for recognition at home. If your country has such a requirement, we help prepare documents for consular registration and advise on the procedure. Conditions for recognition of marriages differ, so we recommend checking them in advance with us or directly with the consulate.
