Many foreigners and Russians residing outside Russia urgently need a Russian power of attorney authorizing another person to act on their behalf on Russian territory. Selling property, managing bank accounts, legal representation in courts, obtaining official documents, registration or deregistration of residential address — a properly prepared power of attorney is the key legal tool for managing your affairs remotely, efficiently and safely.
Obtaining a power of attorney from abroad requires precise understanding of Russian legal procedures and rules of international document legalization. Any error in drafting the power of attorney or in legalization procedures can lead to refusal of Russian authorities to accept it, meaning lost time, effort and money. The Global Docs Pro team has extensive experience in preparing powers of attorney for clients abroad, and we guarantee legally correct powers of attorney accepted by all Russian authorities.
Why Do You Need a Russian Power of Attorney?
Buying and selling property remotely
Many foreigners own real estate in Russia — apartments, land plots, commercial property — and need to sell it or buy new property without traveling to Russia. A power of attorney is the only legal way to complete real estate transactions remotely: it authorizes the agent to attend the notary session, sign contracts and register the transaction with Rosreestr. Without a properly prepared power of attorney, remote real estate transactions are impossible.
Managing bank accounts
Owners of Russian bank accounts residing abroad sometimes need banking operations: transfers, card renewals, closing or opening accounts. Most banks require personal presence or an official power of attorney. A power of attorney allows you to manage funds in Russian banks easily and safely from anywhere in the world.
Legal representation in courts
If you are a party to a Russian court case — plaintiff or defendant — and cannot appear in person, a power of attorney authorizes a Russian lawyer to represent you. Courts accept representation by power of attorney, allowing you to defend your rights without traveling to Russia. The power of attorney must clearly define judicial powers.
Obtaining official documents
Those living abroad often need official documents from Russian authorities: birth certificates from ZAGS, criminal record certificates from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, copies of court decisions and others. All these authorities require either personal presence or an official power of attorney. With a power of attorney, our representative can obtain any document from any Russian authority without your presence.
Registration and deregistration of residential address
Every person in Russia must be registered at their residential address, and upon permanent departure abroad, must deregister. These procedures require personal presence or a power of attorney. A power of attorney allows completing registration actions remotely, avoiding legal problems and fines.
Business and signing contracts
Foreign entrepreneurs with business interests in Russia delegate to partners or employees the right to sign contracts on their behalf. A commercial power of attorney authorizes the agent to conclude deals, sign contracts, open branches and manage commercial affairs. Such power of attorney requires precise definition of commercial authority to prevent abuse.
Types of Powers of Attorney in Russia
General power of attorney
A general power of attorney has the broadest authority: the agent can manage most of the principal’s affairs — money, property, interactions with government authorities, signing documents, representing the principal before third parties. Suitable when you fully trust the agent. You must be careful: broad authority can be misused if the agent is not trustworthy. We always advise assessing the real need before choosing a general power of attorney.
Special power of attorney
A special power of attorney is limited to a specific action or set of actions: selling a particular apartment at a specific address, obtaining a birth certificate from a specific ZAGS office, or representation in a particular case. This is the safest type, as it precisely defines the scope of authority and reduces the risk of unauthorized use. Russian authorities prefer special powers of attorney for their clarity, and we recommend them whenever the purpose is known.
Power of attorney for document retrieval
A special type of power of attorney authorizing the agent to obtain official documents from Russian authorities: ZAGS, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, courts, universities, Rosreestr. It usually includes the authority to file applications, receive documents and sign receipts. Highly popular with our clients, as many need Russian documents without being able to come for them.
Power of attorney for real estate transactions
A specialized power of attorney for buying or selling real estate in Russia: authority to negotiate, sign purchase and sale agreements, attend notary sessions, register the transaction with Rosreestr and receive funds. Requires utmost precision in defining the property and scope of authority, as ambiguity can lead to serious legal problems. Russian notaries strictly check real estate powers of attorney, so drafting must be impeccable.
Power of attorney for court representation
Authorizes a lawyer or legal representative to defend your interests in courts, the prosecutor’s office and law enforcement authorities. Includes the authority to file claims and applications, participate in hearings, sign protocols, receive decisions and file appeals. Requires specialized drafting in line with procedural codes and a list of special powers.
How to Get a Russian Power of Attorney from Abroad
Through a Russian consulate — the simplest way
Issuing a power of attorney at the Russian consulate is the simplest and most straightforward option. A consular power of attorney is an official Russian document requiring no apostille or additional certification — it is exempt from apostille under the Hague Convention. You need to book an appointment at the consulate, appear in person with your passport and provide the agent’s details and scope of authority. The consular officer drafts the document, signs and stamps it, making it ready for use in Russia.
Through a local notary — with apostille and legalization
If there is no Russian consulate in your city or you prefer to use a local notary, it is possible with additional steps. After execution, the power of attorney must be legalized with an apostille (if the country is party to the Hague Convention) or consular legalization (if not), then translated into Russian by a certified translator with notarization by a Russian notary. This method is longer and more expensive but necessary when the consulate is unavailable.
Through our service — full remote coordination
At Global Docs Pro, we offer a comprehensive power of attorney service from any country. We start with a free consultation to determine the type, scope of authority and best way to proceed. We prepare the text in Russian in a form that ensures acceptance by all Russian authorities. We guide you step by step through the consulate or local notary procedures. We handle apostille, translation and certification when needed and deliver the completed power of attorney by courier.
The Power of Attorney Process
1. Free consultation
Contact us via WhatsApp or Telegram and tell us what you need — property sale, bank account management, court representation or document retrieval. We determine the best type of power of attorney, the required authority and the optimal method of issue. We explain all options and help you decide. The consultation is completely free and non-binding.
2. Determining the type and drafting the text
Based on your consultation, we determine the type — general or special — and draft the text in Russian in a form acceptable to Russian authorities. We carefully specify sufficient authority to accomplish the task without unnecessary complications. We review the text with you and make necessary amendments before finalization.
3. Execution at a notary or consulate
After the text is approved, we arrange execution — at the Russian consulate (the simplest option) or with a local notary. We provide detailed instructions on required documents, appointment booking and procedure. We send the prepared text in advance for the consular officer. We ensure all data is correct and complete.
4. Apostille (if the power of attorney is not consular)
If the power of attorney is executed with a local notary outside Russia, an apostille is required for recognition in Russia. We arrange the apostille with the competent authority of the country of issue. If your country is not party to the Hague Convention, we arrange consular legalization through a Russian embassy or consulate. This step is not required for powers of attorney issued at a Russian consulate.
5. Certified translation
After execution and legalization (if necessary), the power of attorney is translated into Russian by a certified translator if issued in a foreign language. The translation is certified by a Russian notary. We work with professional legal translators and guarantee translation accuracy. This step is not required for powers of attorney issued in Russian at a consulate.
6. Delivery
After all procedures are completed, we send high-quality photos of the finished power of attorney for verification and approval. Upon your confirmation, we deliver the original via international courier (DHL, FedEx, etc.) with full tracking and insurance. Delivery usually takes 3–5 business days to anywhere in the world.
